School of Environmental and Forest Sciences – Research Associate (NN27763)
Organization: College of the Environment, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences
Title : Research Associate
Search Number : NN27763
Position Details
We are seeking a postdoctoral Research Associate to work with a team on developing, scaling, and applying models of land use and land cover dynamics for the study of land dynamics at regional to global scales. This position is full time (100% FTE), 12-months/year, with an initial term appointment of one year, renewable depending on funding and performance. The anticipated start date is early August 2018.
The overall goal of the project is to develop models that use agent-based simulation and equilibrium frameworks to bridge local land decision-making dynamics and regional and global scale drivers of change. Models are essential to support thinking about how future landscapes will be shaped by climate and market forces, and how policy and market interventions affect production of ecosystem services and disservices.
Work will include researching, developing, testing, and applying computer-based land-use models, and identifying potential linkages with models of ecological and Earth-system dynamics. Additionally, compilation and analysis of social and environmental spatial data will be required to provide inputs to and context for land-use models. Engagement and collaborations with an interdisciplinary community of researchers will be required, as will writing to support submission of publication manuscripts and grant applications. The incumbent will also have opportunities for professional development through the University of Washington Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (https://grad.uw.edu/for-students-and-post-docs/post-doctoral-affairs/).
All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The University of Washington, a leader in undergraduate and graduate education and one of the world’s premiere research universities, offers rigorous academic programs, outstanding faculty, and diverse cultural and social opportunities in a stimulating intellectual environment. The College of the Environment, including its six Schools and Departments and multiple programs, institutes, and centers, connects educators, researchers, students and citizens, cultivating communities who work with and learn from each other while tackling critical environmental challenges. The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences is dedicated to generating and disseminating knowledge for the stewardship of natural and managed environments and the sustainable use of their products and services through teaching, research and outreach. Our Seattle location is ideal, with access to a multitude of collaboration opportunities in a vibrant urban location with the allure of the mountains, forests and islands within 45 minutes of campus.
The UW and School of Environmental and Forest Sciences promote diversity and inclusivity among our students, faculty, staff, and public. Thus, we are strongly seeking candidates whose experiences have prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion and have given them the confidence to fully engage audiences from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
The University of Washington (UW) is located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, with a dynamic, multicultural community of 3.7 million people and a range of ecosystems from mountains to ocean. The UW serves a diverse population of 80,000 students, faculty and staff, including 25% first-generation college students, over 25% Pell Grant students, and faculty from over 70 countries. The UW is a recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the advancement of women faculty in science, engineering, and math (see http://advance.washington.edu/).
Qualifications:
A PhD or foreign equivalent is required. The successful candidate for this position will have expertise and interests in land system science, agent-based modeling, computational or data science, high-performance computing, and/or geographic information science. Additional areas of expertise could include a quantitative social science and/or economic geography, ecology of human-dominated systems, remote sensing, or survey research. The person in this position will be expected to collaborate with project investigators and other researchers and play a coordinating role for the project.
