MDT Fellowship - Socio-Ecological System Modelling

The James Hutton Institute welcomes applications to one of three new TB Macaulay fellowships spanning our computational, social and environmental science areas.

The fellowship is based at our Aberdeen (UK) site and comes with 3 years funding plus generous start-up costs.

This is an exciting three-year Research Fellowship to expand our activities in sustainability science, with particular focus on investigating ways to implement the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) in Scotland and globally. The position comes with generous start-up costs, and the Fellow would be considered for a tenured position subject to successful progress.

We are seeking highly-motivated candidates with a strong background in sustainability science, with particular experience in modelling coupled human and natural systems. You will have a PhD in an appropriate subject and a demonstrable record of publication in scientific journals and winning research income. You will also have computer programming expertise and good communication skills. Experience in agent-based modelling would also be advantageous.

This post will be based at the Aberdeen site, but there may be a requirement to travel between sites on occasions.

Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of the job is to develop capacity within the Institute for modelling combined human and natural systems, and to use this capacity to carry out research on issues relating to the social, economic and ecological sustainability of Scotland and the earth system. A particular focus will be on using systems modelling approaches to ultimately provide high-quality research evidence relevant to the Scottish Government’s goal to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of land use and rural development.

The position will underpin integrative work in the Strategic Research Programme (SRP), the Centre for Knowledge Exchange and Impact (CKEI), the Centres of Expertise (CXC, CREW, EPIC), as well as contribute directly to externally funded projects such as DEVIL (Delivering Food Security on Limited Land).

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher who combines a strong background in sustainability science with an interest in making an impact on policy and practice. The successful candidate will have skills and experience in research design, simulation modelling of combined human and natural systems (e.g. agent-based modelling), primary and secondary data collection and analysis; knowledge exchange/co-construction, and publishing in scientific journals. We are also looking for experience in winning external funding and project management.

The post is for three years, and will be part of an expanding initiative also including two PhD studentships in the area of planetary boundaries and sustainable development. It is expected that the Fellow will gradually take leadership of the area and develop it further, part of which will be to seek further external funding to secure a longer-term position and other positions and studentships.
