PhD position Modelling Values Attributed to Smart Energy System Platforms at TU Delft

We are looking for PhD candidates on Modelling Values Attributed to Smart Energy System Platforms. More information: http://www.tudelft.nl/index.php?type=a&lang=nl&id=11974&fid=557880. The position is open until July 30th.

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management contributes to sustainable solutions for technical challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences. This research project is part of the NWO programme on Responsible Innovation and will be conducted in close collaboration between the departments of ‘Engineering Systems and Services’ (ESS) and ‘Values, Technology, and Innovation’ (VTI).
The ESS Department focuses on understanding and predicting emerging technological innovations and user service patterns, and uses these insights for improved design, regulation and operation of engineering systems and services in the domains of energy, mobility and ICT. The department of VTI develops useful frameworks for responsible innovation and value-sensitive design through critical evaluation of technological advancements on the basis of fundamental societal and ethical values. This PhD position is in the ESS Department; another is in VTI.

Job description
The PhD candidate will develop an Agent-Based Model (ABM) that simulates the effects of various normative convictions on the technical and institutional robustness of smart grid-based energy systems and the acceptance of the underlying technological platforms. Applying an interdisciplinary perspective, this project integrates insights from innovation management, agent-based modelling, institutional economics, and applied philosophy. The PhD candidate will explore and evaluate the consequences of possible value conflicts for the institutional and technical stability and reliability of possible energy systems and the acceptance of the underlying technological platforms. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS).

Requirements
We are looking for a candidate with an MSc in systems engineering, (technological) innovation management, or an adjacent field. The candidate should have proven experience in working in multidisciplinary settings. Some background in institutional economics or applied philosophy is helpful, but more so is the ability and willingness to acquire this knowledge. The PhD candidate needs to be able to author research papers. There are also opportunities to teach and supervise students.

Conditions of employment
The TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.
